Steps & Smiles: Sometimes We Don’t Need Another Diet — We Need Support

Losing weight can feel like something we’re expected to do on our own.

There are endless diets, meal plans, apps and online programs telling us what to eat and how much to exercise. But sometimes the problem isn’t that we don’t know what to eat.

Sometimes, we just need support.

That’s one of the reasons we’ve started a weight-loss support meet-up as part of Steps & Smiles here in Nerang.

We’re all doing things differently

One of the things I really like about our group is that we’re not all following the same diet.

Some people are trying different eating approaches, some are making small changes to their usual diet, and everyone has their own goals and challenges.

And that’s okay.

This isn’t about telling someone what diet they should follow. It’s about getting together, sharing what is working for us, talking about what isn’t working, and learning from each other.

We already know what we should eat… so why is it so hard?

Most of us already know that vegetables are good for us, that we should eat nutritious foods, drink enough water and keep active.

But knowing what to do and actually doing it every day are two very different things.

Life gets in the way.

Family dinners, birthdays, restaurants, work, stress, tiredness and weekends can all make it harder to stick to our goals.

And when things don’t go well, it can be easy to feel like we’ve failed.

Having other people around who understand those challenges can make a huge difference.

Sharing ideas and small wins

Our meet-ups give us a chance to talk about the everyday things that can make weight loss difficult.

How do you manage going out for dinner?

How do you deal with family members who aren’t trying to lose weight?

What do you do when you’re having a bad week?

How do you stay motivated when the scales haven’t moved?

And sometimes, it’s the small wins that are worth celebrating.

Maybe you made a healthier choice at dinner. Maybe you got through the weekend without giving up. Maybe your clothes feel a little different. Maybe you simply got back on track after having a difficult week.

Those things matter too.

You don’t have to do it alone

The idea behind this part of Steps & Smiles is simple:

We’re not here to judge each other, tell each other what diet to follow or compete with each other.

We’re here to support one another.

We can share ideas, tips, experiences and encouragement — and sometimes just having someone to talk to who understands can be enough to help us keep going.

Weight loss doesn’t have to be a lonely journey.

Sometimes we don’t need another diet.

We just need a little support, some encouragement and people who are walking the journey with us. ❤️

Our group currently meets every fortnight at Cadence Cafe from 10–11am.

If you’re working towards a healthier weight and would like some friendly, non-judgemental support, you’re welcome to come along.
